Über diese Publikation:
Die Forschungen Rudolph Kupers sind darauf gerichtet, jene Phase der Menschheitsentwicklung besser zu verstehen, in der die Menschen erstmals durch Produktion von Nahrungsmitteln ihre Lebensumstände absichern wollten. Es ist aber auch die Phase, in der der Mensch begann, sich in großem Maßstab Behausungen zu schaffen, und die raumgreifende Architektur in die Welt trat. Menschen errichteten ihre Heime, aber sie schufen auch Gebäude für Ideen und Werte, wie sich in allen religiös motivierten und symbolisch erhöhten Bauten zeigt. Es bedurfte keiner Auswahl seitens der Herausgeber, um in den Beiträgen dieser Festschrift ein Spiegelbild des wissenschaftlichen Wirkens von Rudolph Kuper entstehen zu lassen. Die Autoren schreiben über Themen, die, neben der Prähistorie, immer auch zu seinem Betrachtungsrahmen gehörten, seien es Ägyptologie, Geowissenschaften oder der Blick über den Sahararaum hinaus. Folglich ergab sich die Gliederung dieser Festschrift fast von selbst, ohne daß den Autorinnen und Autoren entsprechende Vorgaben gemacht worden waren. Die regionale Teilung war im Norden verständlicherweise feiner zu differenzieren als im Rest des Kontinents, zusätzlich bot die relativ hohe Zahl geowissenschaftlicher Beiträge an, diese geschlossen zu präsentieren. Der Fokus des Buches sollte, genau wie Rudolph Kupers Forschungen, auf den wechselhaften Zustanden der Sahara liegen, die sich in den letzten 10.000 Jahren wie Gezeiten der Wüste ablösten. Als Herausgeber mochten wir allen Autoren dafür danken, daß sie so effektiv mit uns zusammengearbeitet haben und uns die Möglichkeit eröffneten, einen so substantiellen Band zu gestalten.
About this publication:
Rudolph Kuper's research aims to better understand the phase of human development in which people first sought to secure their livelihoods through the production of food. However, it is also the phase in which humans began to create dwellings on a large scale and space-consuming architecture entered the world. People built their homes, but they also created buildings for ideas and values, as can be seen in all religiously motivated and symbolically elevated buildings. There was no need for the editors to make a selection in order to create a reflection of Rudolph Kuper's academic work in the contributions to this commemorative publication. The authors write about topics that, in addition to prehistory, were always part of his scope, be it Egyptology, geosciences or looking beyond the Sahara region. As a result, the structure of this commemorative publication was almost self-evident, without the authors having been given any guidelines. The regional division was understandably more finely differentiated in the north than in the rest of the continent, and the relatively high number of geoscientific contributions also made it possible to present these in a coherent manner. The focus of the book, just like Rudolph Kuper's research, should be on the changing conditions of the Sahara, which have alternated like tides in the desert over the last 10,000 years. As editors, we would like to thank all the authors for co-operating so effectively with us and giving us the opportunity to produce such a substantial volume.
